Thyroid Issues

Ayurvedic treatment for thyroid disorders — hypothyroidism & hyperthyroidism

The thyroid gland plays a central role in regulating metabolism, energy, body weight, and hormonal balance. When it functions poorly — whether underactive or overactive — the effects ripple across every system in the body. At Ayurvedic Herbal Centre in London, we treat thyroid disorders using personalised herbal protocols rooted in 5,000 years of Ayurvedic science — no synthetic hormones, no side effects, and no lifelong dependency.

What is thyroid disorder? Types explained

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck that produces hormones — primarily T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine) — that control how the body uses energy. When production is disrupted, it results in one of two primary conditions:

  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) — the gland produces too little hormone, causing fatigue, unexplained weight gain, cold sensitivity, depression, dry skin, hair thinning, and constipation.
  • Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) — the gland produces too much hormone, causing rapid heartbeat, anxiety, weight loss, sweating, tremors, and sleep disturbance.
  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis — an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid, leading to chronic hypothyroidism.
  • Graves’ disease — an autoimmune disorder causing hyperthyroidism, often accompanied by eye inflammation.
  • Goitre — an enlargement of the thyroid gland, often caused by iodine deficiency or autoimmune disease.

The Ayurvedic view of thyroid disorders

In Ayurveda, the thyroid gland is governed by Agni (metabolic fire) and is associated with the Kapha and Vata doshas. Hypothyroidism reflects a dominant Kapha imbalance — sluggishness, heaviness, and reduced metabolic fire. Hyperthyroidism reflects aggravated Pitta and Vata — excess heat, agitation, and instability.

Ayurvedic treatment works by restoring doshic balance, strengthening Agni, clearing the channels (Srotas) that nourish the thyroid, and removing accumulated Ama (toxins) that disrupt glandular function. This is a root-cause approach — not symptomatic suppression.

Ayurvedic herbs we use for thyroid treatment

  • Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) — one of the most clinically studied Ayurvedic herbs for thyroid support. Ashwagandha helps regulate T3 and T4 levels, reduces cortisol (which suppresses thyroid function), and improves energy and stamina.
  • Guggul (Commiphora mukul) — specifically the compound Guggulsterone in Guggul has been shown to stimulate thyroid function and support metabolism, making it particularly effective for hypothyroidism.
  • Kanchanar (Bauhinia variegata) — the primary herb in classical Ayurveda for thyroid and lymphatic gland disorders. Kanchanar Guggul is a traditional formulation used to reduce goitre and restore thyroid balance.
  • Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) — calms the nervous system, particularly helpful in hyperthyroidism where anxiety and mental agitation are prominent.
  • Triphala — a classical three-fruit formulation that supports digestive health, detoxification, and metabolic regulation — foundational in any thyroid protocol.
  • Shilajit — a mineral-rich resin that supports hormonal balance, cellular energy, and the endocrine system broadly.

All herbal preparations used at our centre are pure, chemical-free, and free from artificial additives or preservatives.

Diet and lifestyle guidance for thyroid health

Ayurveda treats food as medicine. Dietary choices directly impact thyroid function and doshic balance. We guide every patient with personalised recommendations, which typically include:

  • Warm, cooked, easily digestible meals to support Agni (especially in hypothyroidism)
  • Iodine-rich foods such as sea vegetables and dairy (in moderation, as appropriate to constitution)
  • Reducing raw cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower) that can interfere with thyroid hormone production when eaten in excess
  • Avoiding processed foods, refined sugar, and cold or heavy foods that aggravate Kapha
  • Regular gentle movement such as yoga, walking, or Pranayama (breathing exercises) to stimulate circulation and metabolic fire
  • Stress management — chronic stress is a leading driver of thyroid dysfunction and must be addressed alongside herbal treatment

Frequently asked questions

Many patients with hypothyroidism see significant improvement in symptoms — energy, weight, mood, and hair — through Ayurvedic herbal treatment and dietary changes. While we do not advise stopping prescribed medication without consulting your GP, Ayurvedic treatment can work alongside conventional care and, in some cases, support a reduction in medication over time under medical supervision.

Most patients notice improvements in energy levels, sleep, and mood within 4–8 weeks. Thyroid hormone levels typically begin to normalise over 3–6 months of consistent treatment. Chronic or long-standing cases may require a longer programme. Unlike quick fixes, Ayurvedic treatment addresses the root cause — so results tend to be durable.

Yes. Ayurvedic herbs are generally safe to use alongside Levothyroxine and other thyroid medications. However, timing matters — some herbs should not be taken at the same time as synthetic hormones. We advise disclosing all medications during your consultation so we can structure your protocol appropriately and safely.

Yes. Both Hashimoto’s and Graves’ disease are autoimmune conditions and Ayurveda has a strong tradition of addressing autoimmune dysfunction through gut healing, immune modulation, and stress reduction. Herbs like Ashwagandha, Guduchi (Giloy), and Triphala are particularly effective in calming overactive immune responses.

Thyroid health is critical during pregnancy and must be managed carefully. We offer gentle, pregnancy-safe Ayurvedic support but always recommend working in close coordination with your midwife or obstetrician. Please book a consultation so we can assess your specific situation.
