All Types of FLU

Ayurvedic treatment for all types of flu and influenza

Flu — or influenza — is one of the most common viral infections affecting the respiratory system. While many people recover within a week, recurring or severe flu can leave the body weakened for weeks. At Ayurvedic Herbal Centre in London, we treat flu holistically using time-tested Ayurvedic herbs and personalised care — with no chemicals, no additives, and no side effects.

What is the flu? Types of influenza explained

Influenza is caused by three virus strains. Type A is the most severe and responsible for most seasonal epidemics and pandemics. Type B causes milder seasonal illness, primarily affecting children. Type C causes very mild respiratory illness and is rarely reported. All three spread through airborne droplets — coughing, sneezing, and talking — and through contact with contaminated surfaces.

Common flu symptoms include sudden fever, body aches, fatigue, headache, dry cough, sore throat, and nasal congestion. Stomach flu (gastroenteritis) involves nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea and is caused by different viruses, though Ayurveda addresses its root causes effectively as well.

The Ayurvedic perspective on flu

According to Ayurveda, the body is governed by three vital energies — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Flu arises primarily from an imbalance of Kapha and Vata doshas. Excess Kapha dosha leads to nasal congestion, mucus build-up, and sneezing. Disturbed Vata impairs Agni (digestive fire), causing chills, fever, and body ache. Ayurvedic treatment works to rebalance these energies, clear accumulated toxins (Ama), and rebuild immunity at the root level.

Ayurvedic herbal remedies for flu we use

  • Tulsi (Holy Basil) — a powerful antiviral and immune booster, Tulsi reduces fever and clears respiratory congestion naturally.
  • Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia) — known as the “root of immortality” in Ayurveda, Giloy enhances immunity and reduces flu duration significantly.
  • Ginger (Adrak) — anti-inflammatory and warming, ginger relieves sore throat, nausea, and body aches associated with flu.
  • Pippali (Long pepper) — strengthens lung function and clears Kapha accumulation in the respiratory tract.
  • Sitopaladi Churna — a classical Ayurvedic formulation used for centuries to treat cough, fever, and respiratory weakness caused by flu.

All herbal preparations at our centre are free from chemicals, preservatives, and artificial additives.

Diet and lifestyle guidance during flu

Ayurveda emphasises that diet is medicine. During flu, we recommend:

  • Warm, light, easily digestible foods such as khichdi and soups
  • Avoiding cold, raw, or heavy foods that aggravate Kapha
  • Staying hydrated with warm water and herbal teas (ginger, tulsi, black pepper)
  • Adequate rest to allow Vata to settle and the body to heal
  • Steam inhalation with eucalyptus or camphor to clear nasal passages
